Jonathan David scored a hat-trick and Qatar finished with nine men as Canada ran riot 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver. The win sends the co-hosts top of Group B and lifts David level with Messi in the Golden Boot race.
Canada turned their second World Cup match into a statement, thrashing Qatar 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver as Jonathan David helped himself to a hat-trick against a Gulf side that finished with nine men.
The co-hosts settled early. Cyle Larin put them in front on 16 minutes, and David doubled the lead on 29 with a low finish from the edge of the box. Qatar's afternoon then came apart. Homam Ahmed was shown a straight red card on 33 minutes, and Canada played the rest of the game a man up.
David made it three deep in first-half stoppage time, arriving at the back post to send Canada in 3-0 at the break. Eight minutes after the restart Qatar lost a second man, Assim Madibo walking on 53 minutes.
Against nine men, the floodgates opened. Nathan Saliba drilled in a fourth on 64 minutes for his first senior international goal. Qatar's misery deepened when Mohammed Manai turned a low cross into his own net on 75. David finished off a sweeping move in stoppage time to complete his hat-trick and make it six.
The result sends Canada top of Group B on four points, their goal difference now plus six. For David, the personal reward might matter just as much: his three goals took him level with Lionel Messi at the summit of the Golden Boot race. For Qatar, a second-half collapse leaves their tournament hanging by a thread.
For the Kenyan fans who stayed up for the late Vancouver kick-off, this turned into a comfortable watch the moment Qatar lost their heads. Wakanada walicheza kama wenyeji, na Qatar wakajitoa wenyewe: Canada played like hosts, and Qatar undid themselves.
