Amad Diallo's 90th-minute winner gave Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory over Ecuador, the African champions' first World Cup win in 12 years, and moved them level with Germany atop Group E.

Ivory Coast left it late but got the reward their second-half performance deserved, Amad Diallo striking in the 90th minute to beat Ecuador 1-0 and claim the Elephants' first World Cup win in 12 years.

It was a result built on patience. Ecuador were the better side before the break and might have led, rattling the woodwork through John Yeboah and Alan Minda, while the goalless first half offered little hint of the drama to come.

Enner Valencia also struck the post early in the second half, but Emerse Fae's tactical changes gradually shifted the contest. Ivory Coast grew into it, and the winner, when it arrived, was worth the wait: Wilfried Singo burst forward and squared for Amad, who took a touch and slotted calmly into the bottom corner.

For the Manchester United winger, it was a moment of composure on the biggest stage. For Ivory Coast, African champions in 2024, it was a statement that they belong among the contenders. The win lifts them level with Germany at the top of Group E.

Ecuador, so impressive for long spells, will rue their profligacy. For African fans watching in Kenya, though, this was a night to savour: the reigning kings of the continent announcing themselves at the World Cup with a hard-earned three points.
