Match reportSeismic shock: Haaland double dumps Brazil out as Norway reach a first-ever quarter-final
Norway knocked five-time champions Brazil out of the World Cup, winning 2-1 in the Round of 16 to reach their first-ever quarter-final. Bruno Guimarães missed a first-half penalty for Brazil before Erling Haaland struck twice late, a header and a long-range screamer, to take his tally to seven. Neymar's stoppage-time penalty was a consolation as Brazil crashed out.
They will not believe it in Oslo, and they will not want to believe it in Rio. Norway have knocked Brazil out of the World Cup. A stunning 2-1 win in New Jersey, powered by an Erling Haaland double, sends the Scandinavians into the first World Cup quarter-final in their history and the five-time champions crashing out at the last-16 stage, their earliest exit since 1990. This is a seismic result.
And it might have been so different. On fourteen minutes Brazil were handed a golden chance to lead when they won a penalty, but Bruno Guimarães saw his spot-kick spectacularly saved by Ørjan Nyland. It was the turning point nobody quite realised at the time.
What followed was not a smash-and-grab but a masterclass in control. Ståle Solbakken's Norway, so often the nearly-men, dominated the ball with sixty-six percent possession and over six hundred and fifty passes, suffocating a strangely passive Brazil and biding their time. Carlo Ancelotti's side could not get going.
Then their talisman delivered. On seventy-nine minutes substitute Andreas Schjelderup crossed and Erling Haaland powered a header past Alisson to break the deadlock. And on ninety, Haaland iced it, unleashing a ferocious low strike from outside the box that ripped into the net. His brace took him to seven for the tournament, level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé at the summit of the Golden Boot.
Neymar, on from the bench, converted a penalty ten minutes into stoppage time, but it was a consolation and everyone knew it. Brazil, for all their history and their galaxy of talent, had been outplayed and outthought, and the samba stars are going home far, far too early.
For Norway, it is the greatest day in their modern footballing history. A golden generation led by Haaland and Martin Ødegaard, having already ended their own knockout hoodoo against Ivory Coast, have now toppled a giant and reached the last eight. They will face the winner of Mexico versus England, and nobody will fancy playing them now.
For Brazil, the inquest begins, and it will be brutal. This is a nation that expects to win World Cups, not exit them in the Round of 16 to Norway. Questions about Ancelotti, about a generation that has not delivered, will rage from Recife to Porto Alegre.
For Kenya, this was pure, jaw-dropping drama, the kind of night that makes the World Cup the greatest show on earth. Neutrals adore a giant falling, and to see Haaland, all power and menace, personally dismantle Brazil had every sports bar in Nairobi roaring. Haaland amewaangusha Wabrazil peke yake, dunia nzima imeduwazwa: Haaland toppled Brazil almost single-handedly, and the whole world is stunned. The three-way Golden Boot race between Haaland, Messi and Mbappé is now the sub-plot of the tournament. Our Europe verdict hinted this Norway had a big result in them, while our South America verdict will have to explain how the favourites fell.
