Match reportHaaland sends Norway into history: late winner beats Ivory Coast for a first-ever knockout victory
Norway recorded the first World Cup knockout win in their history, beating Ivory Coast 2-1. Antonio Nusa curled in the opener to become Norway's youngest major-tournament scorer, Amad Diallo answered with a stunning solo goal, and Erling Haaland struck late for his 5th of the tournament and 60th international goal. Norway face Brazil next.
History for the Vikings. Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Dallas to record the first World Cup knockout victory in their history, and they did it the hard way, weathering an Ivorian wonder-goal before Erling Haaland struck late to send them into the Round of 16. On a night of individual brilliance from both sides, it was Norway's star power that told.
They led early and in style. On thirty-nine minutes Antonio Nusa curled a gorgeous strike into the top corner from a Martin Ødegaard pass, and in doing so became Norway's youngest-ever goalscorer at a major tournament. The teenager announced himself on the biggest stage.
Then came the moment of the match, and it belonged to Ivory Coast. Amad Diallo had just cleared a certain Norwegian goal off his own line; minutes later, on seventy-four, he picked the ball up deep in his own half and embarked on a spectacular solo run, gliding through the entire Norwegian defence before finishing to level it. A goal of the tournament contender, and a moment of genuine magic.
For a while it looked like the Elephants might snatch it, but Norway have a habit of finding Erling Haaland. On eighty-six minutes Oscar Bobb and Patrick Berg combined down the right, and Berg's low cross was tapped in by the striker at the near post. It was Haaland's fifth goal of the tournament and his sixtieth for his country, and it proved decisive.
Ivory Coast were not done. Deep into stoppage time Diallo stood over a free kick with a chance to force extra time, but Ørjan Nyland flew across his goal to make a spectacular save and protect the win. Emerse Faé's side, so brave and so watchable, were out.
It is a cruel exit for another African team, but a landmark night for Norway, who came through a brutal Group I and now line up a Round of 16 blockbuster against Brazil. Haaland against the five-time champions is a tie the whole world will watch.
For Kenya, Ivory Coast's departure stings, the second African side out in the knockouts. But there is still plenty to cheer, with Morocco, Senegal, DR Congo, Cape Verde, Algeria, Egypt and Ghana carrying the flag. And Haaland, for all that he knocked out an African team, remains box office. Wana-Ivory wametoka wakiwa wamecheza kwa maringo, lakini bara letu bado liko na wengi: the Ivorians go out having played with real style, but our continent still has plenty left. As the knockouts roar on, Africa fights on. Our Africa verdict admired the Elephants, while our Europe verdict always fancied a Haaland-led Norway.
