Eustáquio writes history: Canada edge South Africa with a 91st-minute volley to reach the last 16

Stephen Eustáquio's 91st-minute volley gave Canada a 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32, their first-ever World Cup knockout victory and a place in the Round of 16. South Africa, cautious and undone late, exit on their debut knockout appearance.

The knockouts are where dreams are made and ended in a heartbeat, and Canada found that out on the right side. A single moment of quality from Stephen Eustáquio deep in stoppage time settled a tense, cagey Round of 32 tie at SoFi Stadium, beating South Africa 1-0 and writing a new chapter in Canadian football history.

For ninety minutes it had been a war of attrition. South Africa, on their debut appearance in a World Cup knockout round, were disciplined and largely comfortable, enjoying the majority of possession and giving little away. The game seemed destined for extra time.

Then, in the ninety-first minute, Eustáquio decided it. The FC Porto midfielder met a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area and struck a precise low volley into the corner, a finish of real composure to break Bafana Bafana's resistance at the cruellest moment. It was the only goal Canada needed.

At the other end Maxime Crépeau had done his part, holding firm for a clean sheet, while South Africa's Ronwen Williams could do nothing about the winner. The victory is Canada's first-ever in a World Cup knockout match, sending Jesse Marsch's side into the Round of 16, where the winner of Germany versus Paraguay awaits.

For South Africa, under Hugo Broos, it is a painful end to a proud campaign. Having come through the group to reach the last 32 for the first time, they will rue a defensive approach that invited late pressure and ultimately cost them. So close to extra time, so far from the Round of 16.

For Kenya, an African side going out always stings, even amid the inevitable regional banter at Bafana's expense. Many neutrals felt South Africa played too cautiously, sitting back for extra time rather than taking the game to a beatable Canada. Bafana walicheza kwa woga, sasa wamerudi nyumbani mapema: Bafana played with fear, and now they are heading home early. Canada, meanwhile, march on, having earlier impressed against Switzerland. Our CONCACAF round-one verdict had flagged the host nations’ belief, and Canada are repaying it.
